Our day
The Quarry Hill Day begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:00. The morning session ends with lunch from 11:30 to 12:00. The afternoon session begins at 12:00 and ends at 3:00.
Morning (8:30-11:30)
As children arrive, they put their things away in cubbies, determine
their job at the job board, and then participate in free choice. The
group then comes together in a circle for a story and to discuss the
day's activities. After circle children have free choice: they may
participate in a variety of activities at the project table, play
outside, or engage in group or individual play of their choice. Each
child is offered a snack after which he or she completes the job of
the day and helps pick up. When this is done, we go outside to play
for awhile. We come together again for circle and singing to complete
the morning.
Lunch (11:30-12:00)
After our lunchtime circle and singing, children
wash hands, collect lunchboxes, and sit at a table. Children are
encouraged to unpack their own lunches, and to help each other if
needed, but we are of course available to help with opening
containers, peeling oranges, and any needed assistance. Children whose
day ends after lunch are picked up at 12:00.
Afternoon (12:00-3:00)
As children finish eating, they pack up their lunchboxes and put them
away, brush their teeth, and come together for library time. Children
may choose to look at books individually, in pairs, or in small, quiet
groups. Teachers and/or parents may read to small groups at this
time. After library time we put books away and children are offered
projects as well as a snack and the opportunity to play
outside. Children are picked up by 3:00.
